Ah, another's post yesterday made me think of something. There is a common supply cache around here, is there not? I have no need to request of anything, but I did have a question for those that run it. Or, a proposition perhaps. I am a banker and businessman by birth inheritance and am highly trained and skilled with the workings of such a profession. I realize this is not exactly the same, but if you need a helping hand with keeping up with the supplies and rationing them out--well, that's where being a banker comes in handy. [He chuckles lightly.] I can keep my numbers quite well. I can help with records and the like.

[As if he doesn't volunteer/do enough crap around here, now he's going off and volunteering for more. Oi. Well, anyway, maybe he just wanted to do something familiar for a change. His new trips out into hunting are nice and all but he has to admit (at least to himself) that he misses his less adventurous duties, too. Besides that, it was something (else) he inherited from his father and he wanted to continue it even if it was in some strange place and not quite the same.

...

Or maybe he just needed another hobby. Anyway...]

I did think of something I can ask all of Discedo, including the supply cache since it's an item: does anyone have a scacchi--eschec...ches?--set? Or, perhaps, good at wood-work? Whittling? And would be willing to trade.

Does anybody know how to play the "King's Game"?

[ Perfect! He was just getting bored. ]

King's game? What's that?

You know number well?

...What is a king game?

[identity profile] crystal-eyed.livejournal.com 2010-03-03 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
You're kinda odd for a banker.

What's a King's Game?

[identity profile] foxtamer.livejournal.com 2010-03-03 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
That would be the Moa, Queen of Inventoryland. There might be other caches that are being run, but I'm biased, considering we just agreed to become family.

What kind of game is that? The only game I know that has a "king" in it is Shogi.

Scacchi.

[He pauses for a thoughtful moment.]

It is...a game played by two people each with 16 pieces on a squared board. The traditional pieces are carved into various social classes--the pawn, the knight, the bishop, the tower, and the King and Queen--and the object is to..."check?"... render the King piece inoperable. Hence the name "eschec."

I do. It is a...passion.

It is another name for the game of scacchi. I can teach it to you if I can manage to get a set from somewhere.

[identity profile] 100-mile-dash.livejournal.com 2010-03-03 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
[ Dash has some trouble pronouncing it at first...but then when he hears how it's played... ]

Ooooh! You mean chess?

[identity profile] dreamermoa.livejournal.com 2010-03-03 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
[That was a lot of big words for a ghetto rat, Giovanni.]

You want to join Inventory Club?

[identity profile] sing-nonomori.livejournal.com 2010-03-03 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
I try to find. What is it look like?

[identity profile] betrayedblade.livejournal.com 2010-03-03 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Am I? [He grins knowingly.]

It's another name for scacchi. A nickname due to the main piece of the game, the one you try to protect and that you try to take down the opponent's version.

[identity profile] crystal-eyed.livejournal.com 2010-03-03 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
[ mature tone has arrived! ] Indeed, you are.

[ aaand it's gone. Back to kidtiems. ] Really? Neat... What kinda game is it? One of those strategy ones or something? I always saw the guards playing those in their off time...

[identity profile] betrayedblade.livejournal.com 2010-03-03 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
I know individual factions have their own caches but I am looking for the specific one open to all. As I believe you have answered my question. Grazie.

It is... [why is it so "hard"--read: long--to explain scacchi to a person?] ...a game of strategy. [There. That's short and sweet.]

[identity profile] betrayedblade.livejournal.com 2010-03-03 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
[He apologies?]

Is that what you call it? , if it would help and I would not be in the way. I can give at least part of my time there.

[identity profile] betrayedblade.livejournal.com 2010-03-03 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
I... Ches? Yes, I believe that is what it is called elsewhere.

I kn-know how, I'm not v-very good though.

[identity profile] 100-mile-dash.livejournal.com 2010-03-03 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
I played it once. It was kinda boring. And Vi beat me.

A squared board, black and white or some other opposing colors; two sets of sixteen pieces in the shape of varying social classes: eight pawns, or foot-soldiers; two knights, or horses; two bishops, or clergymen; two towers; one King and one Queen. Each. The two sets should also be in the two opposing colors.

Grazie, Signorina Yorda.

[identity profile] betrayedblade.livejournal.com 2010-03-03 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Pity. [Sly and amused.]

Basically, yes. The point is to trap the other player's King piece while protecting one's own.

[He smiles encouragingly.]

We can change that, bambino.

[identity profile] crystal-eyed.livejournal.com 2010-03-03 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
[ Okay, enough of that. It's fun to tease people but for now he'll just talk normally, kthx. ]

Oh, I see. An intellectual game, then? I'd like to try my hand at it sometime.

I don't h-have a set, but m-markers can always be u-used instead, and a piece of p-paper can be made into a bored as l-long as there is ink to use.

It is meant to stimulate the mind, not the body as other sports. Like literature. [...] But it can be regulated to go as fast or as slow as the opponents wish it to.

[identity profile] 100-mile-dash.livejournal.com 2010-03-03 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
...so it's like reading? [ Ew, reading. Sports are cooler, kthx ]

[identity profile] betrayedblade.livejournal.com 2010-03-03 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
[It's not like he was getting anywhere with Giovanni anyway.]

Indeed. I taught my sons; I am more than willing to teach others. After all, I will need opponents...

[identity profile] acreepybrat.livejournal.com 2010-03-03 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Chess, right?

I know how to play, but... heh, I don't know where to get a set either. [Headcanon says he's pretty good, but unlikely to play very seriously.]
