...perhaps I miss the old routine a bit much. This new one, while nice and cozy, makes only for a decent vacation. Yes, even despite the odd happenstances here and there. It is too...boring.

[He pauses. He's complaining. And he realizes he's turned the communicator without much thinking about it. He was past due for an update anyway, before he discovered for himself just what sort of energy the device packed, and had been thinking about it before he started in on the complaints of this place. Ah well.]

Boring. Listen to me--complaining like some sort of youngster who has nothing better than to get into trouble every day. I converse much too often with giovani here and start to reminiscence on my old lifestyle as if I could get away with what I used to.

[He sighs.] I am getting old. When you start saying 'I'm getting too old for this' it is well past time you are too old for...things.

...Ugh. Now I'm using circular arguments and boring unto death those silly enough to listen to these devices.

Though I can't help but to miss the action back home. Not just the routine... but the purpose. What purpose is there here?

If you're a knight, do you not know the hierarchy of your own kind?

No. I am not a knight. If knights were still in existence in Italia they would serve their noble lord as his, or her, retainer. Just as that lord would serve his king or queen as their retainer. That is the hierarchy of that system.

Firenze is a republic with no such system.

...But the dream is still there in every Italian's heart to have that nobility like all the other countries speak of. But what is it really? [Now he's getting philosophical. He stops himself short. Sorry.]

...I serve as a knight to my lord whom I chose for reasons of my own as best to the ideal that I am capable without compromising my honor and duty to the people. That is the best answer I can give you.

I'd say I do right by the person that counts. She's still alive and ain't nothing gonna change that while I'm still breathing. Anything else is inconsequential.

No. It was never meant to be a knight's job to 'clean up the world'. They only made a mess of it whenever they tried so hard...

Is that the way of your world? Again, I say pity. True chivalry is so much more than that. Yes, unwavering loyalty and servitude; but he is as much for the people as he is to serve his lord. Defend the helpless; strike down the wicked. Virtue and honor.

But perhaps you can leave those to the fairytales if that is what you truly wish.

[Well that struck an unexpected chord... He's not pissed, but those words smart in ways Giovanni couldn't possibly comprehend. And remind him just how desperate his situation back in his world really is. Being the type of knight Giovanni describes would be nice, but that's not an option. Not anymore. If it even ever was.]

You know nothing of being a knight Giovanni. Not the kind of knight I am. There are no weak and helpless, the 'wicked' aren't who you'd expect and everyone on your side is a complete lie. It's a joke. Those fairytales were a bunch of crap. The reality ain't nothing like it!

I've done nothing to anyone in this city. That's real chivalry. As long as I can I mean to keep it that way too. Don't talk to me about 'virtue' and 'honor'. Those things went out the window the day I became a knight. This is all that's left and if anyone doesn't like it, no one's making them stick around.

[If you think this little rant is half-meant to himself for being a stupid idiot and even so much as entertaining the notion of the possibility of being the kind of knight Giovanni described, you would be correct. Otherwise he'd probably have just hung up fff.]

You'd be wrong to think that I know nothing of how the world works. I am not a knight--but my own brand of honor and duty guide my blade in every strike. I am not clad in bright majestic armor, but slink in the darkness and prowl in the shadows. I do not announce my noble intent before the people as I hunt my enemies down, but strike before they know of any danger lurking nearby. My enemies call me by a hated and feared name that all would turn away from; but my Brotherhood is the noblest of bands in the land, my cause the righteous and honorable goal, my intent to protect and defend those that cannot protect themselves.

I am a lair and fake, and my guise a way simply to get where I need to be. I use anything and everything to my advantage, people if need be. Politics, war, and rogues and thieves, mercenaries and courtesans. All are considered ill and wrong; all are my allies.

But I would never, ever give up my honor, my virtue, my nobility. I may be a snake in the grass, but I am not a cold and considerless predator. And I will always let the innocent find favor in my blade, I will always let honor guide its path, and I will always go out of my way to do what is right.

I do not think...I could live with myself otherwise.
